Definition of analytical text
Analytical exposition text is a text that elaborates the writer's topic or idea critically about one side of a phenomenon or situation.
Generic structure
Thesis: Introduces the topic and shows the author's point of view.
Arguments: Describe the arguments to support the author's position. Every argument must be supported by evidence and explanation.
Reiteration: Restate the author's point of view / to strengthen the thesis.
Purpose of analytical text
An analytical exposition is a type of text in which the purpose is to persuade the audience by making an argument. It can be either written or spoken; when written, it is often called an analytical exposition essay.
Language features of analytical text
Focus on generic human and non-human participants.
Use mental processes. It is used to state what the writer or speaker thinks or feels about something. For example: realize, feel, etc.
Use material processes. It is used to state what happens. For example: pollute, grab, write, etc.
Use of simple present tense.
- Subject + is / am / are + Object + Adverb
- Subject + Verb 1 s/ es + Object + Adverb
Use of relational processes. The act of being, having, or becoming. For examples: is, has/have, become.
Use of internal conjunction to state argument. For example: in addition, moreover, then, alternatively, at first, finally.
Reasoning through casual conjunction or nominalization. For example:
- Casual conjunction: because, because of, since, for.
- Nominalization (the noun forms of verbs): the rapid increase in crime was causing concern among the police.
